"When books are challenged, restricted, removed or banned, an atmosphere of suppression exisits... The fear of the consequences of censorship is as damaging as, or perhaps more damaging than, the actual censorship attempt. After all, when a published work is banned, it can usually be found elsewhere. Unexpressed ideas, unpublished works, unpurchased books are lost forever."

Robert P. Doyle, Banned Books: 1998 Resource Guide. Chicago: American Library Association, 1998.

In observation and celebration of Banned Books Week, we offer the history of censorship of chosen books. Please visit the Social Sciences & Humanities Library Reference Area for our exhibit and join us on September 29, in Geisel Library's Seuss Room for the showing of two films, "Tin Drum" (6:00pm) and "Lolita" (8:30pm), whose books were once censored.
