Purpose and Charge:

Responsible for planning, coordinating and assessing SSHL outreach efforts. This includes SSHL outreach events, displays, and publications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Coordinate outreach opportunities for SSHL; sharing information within the department and to other departments as necessary
• Collaborate on developing outreach opportunities with subject librarians; outreach coordinators; other departments and committees as appropriate
• Identify outreach opportunities
• Maintain a fiscal accounting of the budget and participate in the annual budget call for new monies
• Create and document policies and procedures as needed to ensure outreach activities are carried out effectively
• Measure the effectiveness of SSHL outreach efforts
• Serve as an outreach communication tool for all SSHL units

Communication and reporting:

SSHL Outreach Planning Committee reports directly to the Assistant Department Head for Reference, Instruction and Outreach. Where appropriate, the Committee will be responsible for communicating with and soliciting input from units within in SSHL, other departments in the libraries, and campus departments. Issues, decisions, and recommendations will be documented and made available on the SSHL Intranet as and when appropriate. The Committee will meet monthly. Ad hoc meetings can be added, as necessary.

Recommendation/Decision Process:

Decisions based on broad policy issues shall be referred to the ADH Reference, Instruction and Outreach. Issues that are determined to be outside the scope of the Committee are to be referred to the Department Head.

Budget:

Outreach events will be funded from the SSHL department operations budget. An initial program budget of $3000 will be set aside for the first year of operation. A budget call will be conducted each year for additional monies. The Committee may identify other sources of money to assist in the programming.

Membership and Terms of Appointment:

Membership should be board representation of the Social Sciences & Humanities Library. The members will be responsible for active participation in the committee and will serve for a two-year term beginning in July of each year. The Chair will be selected by the membership and will normally serve for 2 years.

SSHL Outreach Committee Mission Statement

The SSHL Outreach Committee will develop a coordinated outreach program to showcase outreach activities, collections and services for the UCSD community in order to strengthen the identity of our library as the library for disciplines within social sciences and humanities.

Priorities for 2006/2007:

  • Identify and expand upon existing SSHL outreach efforts
  • Identify and use SSHL strengths to reach users
  • Provide a clear SSHL identity for the user
  • Facilitate an open line of communication between Access services, Research services, UCSD community
  • Evaluate and assess SSHL outreach activities for future planning purposes
