SSHL Outreach Committee
December 15, 2004
Present: Allie Emigh-Carr, Katy Farrell (convener), Matthew Ferguson, Dorthea Stewart, Vicki Williamson (recorder), Lydia Ybarra
Announcements
- The plastic carabineers have been ordered as the new SSHL promotional item. They should arrive in early January and we’ll only have 500 of them. (KF)
- The planning for Black History Month is nearly completed (by Allie and Katy). Two films will be shown: Emperor Jones and Stormy Weather. There will be an online exhibit and a bulletin board exhibit, both showcasing personalities from the Harlem Renaissance. Also, Katy has been in contact with Professor Camille Forbes re: presenting a faculty lecture in the library. Dates for films and lecture are TBD.
Discussion & Brainstorming
- Katy met with the head of the Center for Teaching & Development. She will send them her ideas of what the library can do for them, see what they’re interested in, and plan a workshop. Lydia suggested that Departmental A.A.’s get invited to participate, since oftentimes they are the people who are asked to send in the reserves lists. Katy suggested that we also offer training through the Staff Education & Development office.
- Allie suggested that the library offer a drop-in study hall where librarians and T.A.’s can help students with their bibliographies, citations, and papers. We could offer food and invite the writing centers for each college to participate.
- Lydia noted that there is no library representation at the New Employee Orientation, so that would be an opportunity to explore.
- Katy asked the group to discuss what can we realistically accomplish by the end of June 2005 and who will be responsible for which events?
- Black History Month (Allie-planning completed)
- Women’s History Month (Vicki-will find out theme, determine local interests, and invite UCSD Women’s Center to use library space for event in March, offering to pay for refreshments)
- Library orientation packets for new faculty and staff (Matthew, Shannon, and Elisabeth)
- Procedures and processes for library services marketing (Katy and Lydia)
- Event and exhibit planning and assessment (Dorthea and Allie)
- Summer Reading Program (all-committee involvement)
- Since our meetings have been scheduled for twice per month, Katy suggested that the sub-groups use the first meeting of every month to work on their specific task and then report back to the whole committee at the second meeting of the month.
Next meeting: January 20
