Latin American Studies: The Margarita Melville Archive contains hundreds of files of ephemeral material assembled by a Maryknoll nun who was actively involved in the early development of Guatemalan opposition groups beginning in the 1960s. It contains unique materials that document the government repression of Mayan Indian groups and their responses during the civil war that wracked Guatemala for thirty years. This archive is housed in the Mandeville Special Collections Library.
Latin American Studies: The Donald H. and Marjorie A. Perkel Collectioncontained 400 volumes on pre-Columbian art and architecture, with a strong focus on Mayan civilization. This very focused and beautifully developed collection greatly enhanced our collections in an area where we have faculty and students in a number of departments carrying out detailed research. The volumes have been integrated into the collections of the Social Sciences & Humanities Library and the Art & Architecture Library.

The purchase of January 1927-December 1939 added two decades to the holdings SSHL has been building over the last several years (1940-1980). The Chronicle documents the social, ethnic, political and cultural development of one of California's two largest urban centers, and this purchase expands coverage to the key eras that bridge the closing years of 1920s prosperity, the Great Depression and New Deal, and the approach of World War II.
