What kinds of materials can be placed on Course Reserves?

SSH Library will place books, CD Rom, and photocopies on Course Reserves.  We CANNOT place library copies of journals or periodicals on reserve.  Books from our collection will be processed and placed on Course Reserves by our staff.  Personal or departmental copies of reserve items are welcome and will be promptly returned at the end of the quarter.  Note that personal copies will be taped and bar-coded.  Click here for more detailed information on the process of submitting photocopies.

What if the Library does not own an item I’d like to place on Course Reserves?

The SSH Library will attempt to order any book needed for Course Reserves.  If the UCSD bookstore carries the book, it will take about one week to process.  If the material must be ordered through the publisher, it can take one to four months to receive the books.  Out of print books may be unavailable.  Personal or departmental copies are welcome.

Can I keep what I had on reserve last quarter for the upcoming quarter?

Yes, you certainly can. We do however require that everything that is put on reserve be requested by the professor each quarter. If material is going to remain on reserve from one quarter to the next, we require a new request form be submitted. This request must be received by the call for reserves deadline, usually 2 or 3 weeks prior to the first day of instruction for the new quarter.

If I supply my own personal copies, how do I get them back?

In the event that the library does not own an item and the item is out of print we encourage the professor or department to supply us with a copy.  It is common practice that all personal copies will be returned at the conclusion of the quarter to the professor’s or the department’s mail code the week following final exams.  If you would prefer not to have the items returned to you through campus mail, please indicate on your initial request at the beginning of the quarter that you would prefer to pick them up yourself at the conclusion of the quarter.  We will hold material for one week beyond finals week if you choose to pick it up at the library.
