What course reserves are kept at SSHL?
SSHL houses paper and CD Rom material for all social sciences and humanities and some science and mathematics courses. Music, film and video, and slide formats are housed elsewhere in Geisel Library. SSHL does not house material for graduate level science and engineering courses, or upper division courses for science and engineering, mathematics, biology, or biochemistry.
How can I find out if something is on Course Reserves?
To find out if an item is on Course Reserves, use ROGER Web, the UCSD Online Catalog. ROGER will show the location as "SSH Reserves." You will need to know either the professor's name or the course abbreviation for the class you want to search for. Select one of the following links from ROGER's main page:
Enter the professor’s name (last name first) or Course abbreviation (as printed in Class Schedule). Once you are in the correct course record, a list of items on reserve will appear, similar to the one below:
NEED SCREENSHOT HERE
Find the title you need in the left-hand column, and make a note of the call number from the right-hand column. Also, be sure to note that the location of the item is “SSH Reserves.” It is possible that your class reserves are at a different library’s circulation desk (S&E, BML, SIO, or IRPS).
My professor said there were items on reserve for my class, but there are none listed. Where are they?
There are many possible reasons for this. First, make sure you've searched properly for your class. Double-check that you have correctly spelled your professor's name or that you have put in the appropriate course abbreviation. It is also possible that the items were requested, however library staff have not yet had time to process the request. In this case check back periodically to see when the item appears on the reserve list. You may also want to check with your professor to verify that something was indeed put on reserve.
How do I check out Course Reserve items?
Course Reserve material may be checked out at the Circulation Desk. It must be requested by call number, and you must have a valid UCSD I.D. card with a current quarter sticker. The SSHL Circulation desk is located at the immediate entrance to the Geisel Library.
How many items may be checked out at one time?
The limit is 3. (Any combination of distinct titles, books and/or articles, not to exceed a total of 3).
How long may items be checked out? Can they be renewed?
Course Reserve items may be checked out for a 3-hour loan period. They can also be taken overnight if they are checked out within three hours of the library’s closing. An overnight reserve check-out would be due back the next business day, three hours after the library opens. Some graduate level classes and research readings check out for 1-day and are due back before the library closes the next business day. All reserves items must be returned directly to the SSHL Circulation desk. Course Reserve items, unless they’ve been designated high usage as they are at various times of the quarter, may be renewed at the SSHL circulation desk. Reservations and holds are not accepted. Fines will begin to accrue immediately after the 3-hour check-out period if an item is not returned on time.
