  • Today is Tammy Dearie’s last day in SSHL.  During the interim, Sam will cover selection for the small library science fund.
  • Today’s meeting is short in order for us to attend a presentation by Elise Proulx (Marketing & Outreach Director, eScholarship Publishing Group, CDL) on “Getting Faculty Started with eScholarship” at 2:00 p.m. in the S&E Events Room.
  • Walter Beals will present a 30-minute presentation on the ProQuest New Digital Microfilm Product in the Seuss Room on Thursday, April 8, from 2:30-4:00 p.m.  This product “can transform your existing microfilm newspaper subscriptions over to digital images cover to cover.

Update on electronic resources:

  • We have access to Hispanic American Newspapers (Readex).
  • We have access to the Index to Legal Periodicals Retrospective, 1908-1981 (Wilson).
  • Two resources are in the licensing pipeline: International Medieval Bibliography (Brepols) and Gale Library Directory (to replace Associations Unlimited, which CDL cancelled).
  • Electroniclib is obtaining pricing information for new Oxford Digital Reference titles: Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World, Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, Dictionary of the Renaissance, Dictionary of the Reformation, and the Dictionary of Byzantium.
  • Music Online (http://music.alexanderstreet.com) provides audio and texts about the music through one centralized interface.  It now cross-searches four of our Alexander Street subscription databases:  American Song, Classical Music Library, Contemporary World Music (a new one), and The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online.  In early summer, African American Music and Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries will be added. The new database in the package, Contemporary World Music, is a growing database to include reggae, world beat, world fusion, African film music, Arab swing and jazz, Bollywood music, and other genres.

CCG updates

  • We are looking at ways to take a 5% permanent cut to our state funds at each of our libraries.  We will review UCSD locally-licensed databases, standing orders, serial titles duplicated across libraries, and the CDL format migration list.  The 5% target figures are: Arts - $8420, IR/PS - $19,533, MSCL - $3, 731, SSHL - $98,615.  By cancelling the print titles in Project MUSE, we would save $14,000.  The Acquisition Department will track the savings by branch beginning April 1.  At this point, this exercise is tempered by the fact that we have collections reserves carry-forward monies that will be applied to the budget shortfall and thus potentially reduce the permanent cut to under 5% for this year.
  • CDL is currently working on the annual title transfer process.  Currently licensed titles moving between packages will be covered.  We are also identifying campus new title requests to add to the packages.  During the course of the year, as Collection Managers identify essential new titles in their subject areas, they should send them to Adriana Moran, with a copy to their library’s Collection Coordinator.
  • The revised charge to the Shared Print Steering Task Force was distributed and representatives for the humanities, social sciences, and sciences are being identified to joint members of the SPSTF.  Among other things, this group will be looking at UC joint approval plans through our major vendors.
  • The Springer shared print archive will be located at the UCM.  CDL is looking at ways to identify it as a shared UC resource and UCM will be responsible for replacing any lost volumes under the terms of the persistence policy.
  • A UC Scopus Task Force was created to publicize the Elsevier product during the initial “free” period.   This will allow for assessment and for us to manage campus expectations.  Jeff Williams and Rob Melton are on the Task Force, and Jeff is the UCSD rollout & evaluation liaison.

Discussion:

  • The “Priorities for Disaster Recovery” document was last revised in June 2005 and needs updating.  Collection Managers should review their subject areas and convey any changes to their respective library’s Collection Coordinators.  In the event of an emergency, the Excel list can be sorted by library, floor, and call number area, and allow the Disaster Recover Team to treat high-priority collections first.
  • A similar document will be created for the Annex, now that Special Collections materials are permanently housed there.  In addition, Arts Library materials are temporarily located at the Annex during the West Wing renovation.
