SSH Cluster Bibliographers Group
August 12, 2009
1:00-2:15 p.m. Room 276

Meeting Summary

Present:  Leslie Abrams, Ken Calkins, Victoria Chu, Kathy Creely, Sam Dunlap (convenor), Ryan Finnerty, Tony Harvell, Martha Hruska, Sanae Isozumi, Elliot Kanter, Karen Lindvall-Larson, Alice Perez, Annelise Sklar, Kelly Smith, Michael Smith, Roger Smith

Announcements and Updates:

  • We will adjourn at 2:15 in order for the libraries digital signage trainers to set up.
  • Leslie reported that the combined Arts Reference section will consist of titles formerly located in AAL, Music, and the film reference classifications in SSHL.

New databases, trials, etc.

  • Stacy reported an e-resource breach over a two-day period that involved massive downloads of pages in each session.  If patrons report being locked out of journals to reference desk staff, this may be the reason and patrons should be made aware that such downloading is not in agreement with our user licenses.
  • Sam reported that the SSHL New Books shelving has been installed in the Reference area and that the YBP shelf-ready books will be staged each week for general review by the collection managers.  Kelly will work out the workflow details and we can tweak the process over the summer as needed.
  • Annelise announced that the World Bank e-Library has migrated to the Ingenta platform which is much easier to use.

CCG updates:

  • Sam showed the new “featured collections” section of the UCSD Libraries Collections page that highlights the Springer eBook collection (including textbooks), selected Ebook collections, and the Alexander Street Videos.  Please send ideas (and content!) for other new featured collections to Sam.
  • Tony announced that that the Ebrary subscription renewal is coming due and referred to the monthly usage statistics by subject that Sam subsequently distributed to the Group.
  • Martha described an Ebrary pilot of patron driven selection that UCM currently participates in and we will ask them about their experience with it.
  • Tony reminded the Group that with Ebrary, the latest editions are not included automatically and that it depends on the publisher as to the timing of the e-edition.
  • Roger presented data to CCG on binding preferences across the libraries and suggested additional areas to cut, if needed, but that there are no current action steps needed at this time.
  • Tony announced that a 3% price increase for monographs has been added to each of the subject funds, in addition to monies added to cover encumbrances. In addition, we will use endowment funds as much as possible to absorb cuts to collections from state funding.
  • The overall System cut to CDL resources is anticipated at 15% and the timing may be problematic for the 2009/2010 FY.
  • Stacy announced that CDL added only a few new T&F titles to the package and that we should not expect any action anytime soon.  In addition, T&F has purchased the Heldref journals package <http://www.heldref.org>.  UCSD is working with T&F to license titles locally.

Discussion:

  • Sam walked the Group through the JSC August 5 letter to the Chairs of the UC Bib Groups and highlighted some of the large-scale projects underway throughout the next year of particular interest across the Arts/Humanities and Social Sciences.  There will soon be negotiations with Wiley-Blackwell and Taylor & Francis and CDL expects to call upon the Bib groups for their input throughout the year.  Everyone should pay close attention as the negotiations proceed.
  • Sam, Martha, and Tony are members of the CDL Shared Print Steering Task Force (SPSTF), and Tony and Sam participate with the Primary Monograph Vendor working sub-group.  These groups are developing policies and procedures governing the acquisition, processing, cataloging, storage, and access of materials entering the Shared Print Program.  Area Studies Bib Groups have been asked to submit proposals to the SPSTF for us to use as an actual test case.  Sam recommended that the subject Bib Groups also discuss areas of potential acquisitions collaboration across the campuses.
