Rebecca noted that this product is still in development and the producers are very interested in learning of additional content to add.
Holly updated the group on the new VPN Client (“AllThroughUCSD”) as well as giving a brief description of the available (but currently unsupported) EasyConnect login option. Information about currently supported methods of remote access was detailed in the email sent to LIB-ALL, and a copy of the mail along with a list of known issues with EasyConnect is available for staff at http://sshl.ucsd.edu/easyconnect.html.
Susan demoed the ease of creating rss feeds to create new items list and the simplified instructions are available via http://rogerinfo.ucsd.edu/rsssimplified.html
Regarding ebooks, some packages such as, CogNet, ACLS Humanities Ebook, and Ebrary permit single-page printing rather than a range of pages. This kind of DRM control does not fit our preferred service model for ebooks, but is used by publishers who are concerned about ownership and intellectual property issues. There are usage statistics for Ebrary (including the eDuke Scholarly Books collection) at the title and subject level and the list may be filtered by publisher, etc. Holly will send these to the Group. We will be monitoring usage and how that might be affected by the ebook service models as we assess continuing the various ebook packages next year.
Sam and Martha updated the Group on the Collection Coordinators meeting with Brian Schottlaender regarding endowment funds. There are some balances that have accumulated over a few years that should be spent down. In addition, we will think creatively about how we may profile certain subject areas in our approval plans to specific endowment funds and thus free up State 19900 funds for other purposes. UCSD collections received a $90K permanent cut this year and UC and UCSD administration is closely scrutinizing areas where there are unexpended monies. The endowment funds in question are particularly suited to offsetting budget cuts in the arts and humanities areas. We anticipate a Call for Special Purchase Proposals in late October or early November, but subject specialists should submit SPPs at any time, particularly if there is special sale pricing with a short deadline.
