Meeting Summary

Announcements:
Welcome to Adele Barsh, Librarian for Economics and Business. Welcome, Adele!
New database acquisitions:
- Encyclopedia of Islam, previously UCSD-only, is now a Tier 1 resource that best viewed in Firefox.
- In support of the Rady School and Department of Economics, the new WRDS, pronounced "words" or "W.R.D.S." (Wharton Research Data Services) interface will offer patrons access to Compustat and CRSP data (economic and financial data sets) as well as selected other related time series data. Formerly we had the CRSP data on CD-ROM, but it is now available online. Access is somewhat restrictive - the license requires users must have a current UCSD email address and there is a process to request approval that is fielded by the Economics & Business Librarian. As of 10/11/06, the final contract is pending.
- Global Market Information Database (GMID) from Euromonitor, which contains international marketing and demographic statistics, as well as selected economic data and forecasts.
- China Data Online has a bilingual interface and provides Chinese economic, statistical, and census data.
- Wanfang Data includes five databases: Policies and Laws in China, Chinese Companies and Products, Dissertations of China, Academic Conferences in China, and China Online Journals.
Database trials:
- Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (2 nd ed.), UCSD trial.
- Lexicons of Early Modern English, UC-wide trial. This database compiles entries from (currently) 1207 lexicons, dictionaries, word-books, etc., published from the advent of printing in English to 1702 (roughly the same period covered by ESTC). It is, therefore, the richest compilation of how English speakers and writers in the Tudor, Stuart, Caroline, and early Restoration periods understood the meanings of the common and technical words they used.
Other database news:
- We are reviewing the site license for the online Chicago Manual of Style.
- DYABOLA, published by the German Archaeological Institute, previously available in on CD-ROM (AAL) is now online.
- Bibliography of North American Indians is changing platforms, from Ovid to EBSCO.
- UC Press AnthroSource and UC Press Journals on Caliber have both joined Portico.
- University of Chicago Press has instituted a new “enterprise model” that will raise prices dramatically. We will discuss how to proceed at the campus and system-wide level.
Tony announced that CDL had asked campuses to report back on their estimated Shared Print Program savings. UCSD reported cancellation value of $568,226 savings in subscription costs as a result of our format migration efforts. That “savings” is now earmarked for paying for our online journals packages.
Updates:
Highlights from meetings of the Collection Coordinators Group
- Sam reported that the CDL has reached what they believe is an acceptable agreement with the Taylor & Francis Group. The license will provide access to content to over 1000 titles in the humanities and social sciences from 1997 forward. CDL will attempt to negotiate one print copy to reside in a UC Shared Print Archive or until T&F joins Portico. Campuses will discuss moving to e-only from 2007 forward.
- Tony reported on his recommendations to CMG for allocating the permanent increase to base: a 14% increase to the digital fund, a 6.8 increase to continuations, and monies to the access fund, which pays for Tricor/Circuit delivery, Copyright Clearance Center fees for e-reserves, and the Blackwell Table of Contents Enrichment Service for the SSH Cluster. One-time monies may be available, based on demonstrated need, for the SSH Cluster. Next year the libraries will again be able to draw on Geisel endowment collection funds.
- Tony reported that Acquisitions is looking into different ways to handle standing order purchase, now that we have new selection options in Gobi and other vendor databases. Acquisitions will distribute lists of standing orders for us to 1.) identify important series which should continue to be tracked locally, especially for items which are not classed together, and 2.) allow for general cleanup and checkup of STOs we have under the various subject funds.
OttoEditions search features
- Sam distributed a screen print that demonstrated how to search by Harrassowitz subject heading or LC class; limit publication year between 2006-2006 with language English; the date added to OttoEditions (20060701-20060901) [i.e. how to search for records added to the database over a two-month period]; and how to assign our customer code “CALLA,” fund, and selector initials. All collection managers should have received their user name and password and people may contact Sam with any database or search questions.
856 field and related “problems”
- Sam distributed copies of several records for Otto Weininger’s Sex and character: an investigation of fundamental principles., which a UCSD faculty member discovered in Melvyl and asked why we do not have access to the electronic edition. Roger indicates that UCSD owns the print volume HQ 21 .W413 2005. Melvyl, however, contains two records that link UCSD’s print holding to two “online” records. The first is to a record with UCM’s full-text electronic ebrary edition. The second to a record where other campuses have made links out to the LC table of contents. Ryan explained that this is the way CDL has set up Melvyl to generate the automatic “online” stamp for the 856 field that contains table of contents information, links to URLs, book jackets, and any other electronic information. If there are concerns, we should send our comments to CDL.
Discussion:
Replacement Project and staging of printouts for general review
- Alice described the current workflow practice of staging printouts in call number order for general secondary review by all collection managers. We agreed that printouts for items designated “OP” (or replace/search on the out-of-print market), should be sent to Acquisitions immediately in order to begin the replacement process. Printouts designated “W” (withdraw) or “R” (replace) would be staged in case other collection managers felt a decision should be changed: a “W” changed to “R” or “OP”, or an “R” changed to “OP.”
Strategies for focusing on 6 th floor collection review and transfer of materials to SRLF
- Similar to our work on the 7 th Floor, the collection managers will tackle the crowded conditions from a number of fronts to transfer materials to SRLF: low-use monographs, ceased serials, and split-run titles partially located in the Stacks, the Annex, and SRLF. Collection managers should think about criteria to use in asking for a Boolean list of low-use monographs to review for transfer or withdrawal. Criteria could include catalog date (pre-1997), circulation (0-3 circs), or last check-in date (pre-2000). Sam will work with Ryan to generate a list of split-run titles for review,
Annex Tour #2
- We will plan another Annex tour later in the quarter for people who were unable to attend the first tour on September 12. We will plan around Catherine and Martha’s schedules so they can participate.
Next meeting: Wednesday, December 13, from 1-2:30 in Room 276
