Announcements and Updates:
- Announcements
- The fiscal year is half over, so book funds should be about 50% encumbered or spent. (T. Harvell)
- Museum project is almost done, with no more than 10,000 volumes to be selected. Some books are in the building already and more will continue to arrive. (S. Jurist).
- New databases, trials, etc.
- Lexis/Nexis Datasets trial has been extended. (S. Dunlap reporting for B. Vejvoda.
- SFX links have been activated, including links for some 160 titles in the Oxford Reference Premium Online. Some of these titles are already cataloged in Roger, but more records are being added, updated, etc. Access is limited to a small number of simultaneous users. (S. Nelson)
- Nature took over Palgrave McMillan, including management of the subscriptions for that publisher. There is a new site license for those serial titles, which includes perpetual access back to 2004. (S. Nelson)
- SpringerLink trial continues through end of December. This provides access to the entire set of Springer ebooks, pending decision on the collections to be included in the CDL deal. This is now being highlighted on the libraries website. (M. Hruska)
- A “collections” webpage will be going up soon, which will be linked to the library website. The page will highlight something new each month. Suggestions for highlights may be sent to Martha Hruska. (M. Hruska)
- Books from the SIO Library will be sent for scanning by the Google Book Search project beginning in January. Due to the recent settlement of a lawsuit against Google, Google is limiting scanning of titles which are still in copyright. Although UCSD had begun sending the East Asia collection for scanning, this has been halted for the time being, as Google found that SIO’s collection would yield a higher percentage of titles that are not copyright. Work on scanning the East Asia and Melanesia collections will resume in late spring or summer. (M. Hruska)
- U in serials holdings statement. A TSMG subgroup recommendation has been distributed, which recommends taking U (standing for Unbound) out of the serials holdings statements, as this is confusing to some users. (R. Finnerty)
- CCG issues. (H. Colson, M. Hruska)
- Web archiving program. CCG discussed a procedure which it will send out in early January, for proposals to begin archiving websites. The program will focus on non-commercially-licensed sites, as suggested by collection librarians.
- Shared Print Collection Development program has been proposed by CDC, with a call being made to bibliographers groups for participation. The budget situation makes this even more important/urgent. Materials acquired in this way will be jointly owned by the campuses, and housed in SRLF. Catalog records will be in Melvyl, but not in local catalogs.
- WorldCat Local. The catalog records for the SCP electronic resources in the trial/test database for this have been very limited. A call has been put out to the HOPS group to set priorities for the loading of large sets (e.g. EEBO, ECHO, etc.).
- Budget. The budget situation is grim. Although the impact on collections budget is not yet known, it is likely that there will be cuts. UCSD plans to use NEH endowment funds to cover some approval plan purchases, resulting in slightly less NEH funding for special purchases.
- Special purchase proposals have been turned in and decisions will be announced soon, likely before the holiday break. There may be another call in the Spring.
Discussion:
- WorldCat selection tool overview. This is an OCLC product which is designed to improve collaboration. At present only Harrasowitz slips are available through the tool, but Cassalini and Touzot slips will be coming up soon, with Gobi eventually being added as well. It is hoped that eventually most selections will be made through this tool, rather than through the individual vendors. The URL is http://connexion.oclc.org/. Tony Harvell will be giving out logins/passwords today. Training will take place in January. (T. Harvell).
- Weeding and SRLF allocation for 08/09. The SRLF allocation for this year is 32,000 volumes, twice our usual allocation. We have currently identified titles for 40% of that goal. Other UCSD Libraries are weeding, but SSHL will still need to identify 10 to 12,000 volumes towards the goal. Roger Smith and Rob Melton will work with Ryan Finnerty and Sam Dunlap, to come up with a plan for weeding of SSHL holdings in the Annex. (R. Finnerty, S. Dunlap)
- Trials for electronic resources. A new CCG policy has been posted on the Acquisitions Department website. The policy clarifies the preference that trials be based on password access, rather than IP addresses, and that access be limited to the librarian and interested faculty. Trials should be requested and managed by the librarian, but the Electronic Resources Unit in Acquisitions should be kept informed. See the complete policy at: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/acq/policyontrialsforelectronicresources.html (S. Nelson)
