1. Announcements:
- New database trials and acquisitions:
- JSTOR contains 18 new titles, mostly arts and humanities.
- We have a trial for UN Comtrade through January 2, 2006. This provides global product trade data and is the online IMF “Direction of Trade Statistics.”
- CMG approved Book Review Index Online.
- Factiva is available and Harold distributed the blocked titles list.
- Roper online data is almost here
- The license for Business Monitor was signed. This is an “EIU-like” product with country and industry reports.
- Training for Refworks is scheduled for February, 2006.
- Elliot has adjusted the Sage records for PCI.
- Newsbank’s America’s Newspapers is now Access World News, with much improved content.
2. Updates:
- YBP Shelf-Ready:
- Tony announced that we should see shelf-ready titles beginning in January 2006. We will apply a non-returnable fund code, and “rejected” titles should fall below 4%.
- Publicizing Electronic Resources:
- Tony distributed the Acquisitions Department workflow for electronic resources and reminded the group the many steps need to be completed before the resource is publicized. They must review the license, anticipate barriers, and have time to negotiate. Sometimes we do not know the complete details until the resource is activated. When the resource is available, the Acquisitions Department will send a message to the resource selector to publicize and to the Metadata Services Department to have the resource cataloged.
- Highlights from the 12/7 Collection Coordinators Group meeting (Harold, Leslie, and Sam in attendance):
- Sam reported that UCSD’s allocation to SRLF for 05/06 is 40,000 volumes
- UC will support the open-access “Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy” with payments totaling $120,000 over three years. Sam noted that this request bypassed the UC Philosophy & Religion Group and that this resource was never on that group’s list of priorities for the CDL.
- The annual review of Blackwell and Elsevier ScienceDirect titles is in the works and Sam is UCSD’s representative for the Social Sciences and Humanities. He will work with the subject librarians to discuss titles moving in and out of packages, as needed. Deborah Kegel and Jeff Williams are our representatives for the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences.
- Tony outlined the electronic resource purchases and activation process.
- The group discussed potential e-books acquisitions.
- Harold agreed to conduct a training session for the OCLC Collection Analysis Tool in early 2006.
3. Discussion:
- Fund codes:
- Tony announced that the funds codes for direct orders (anth1) and approvals (anth2) will be collapsed beginning on July 1, with the start of the 06/07 fiscal year. The group agreed that this is a good idea.
- Elsevier ScienceDirect and Blackwell Title Adjustments 2005/2006:
- Sam is reviewing the complex title lists and will consult with the appropriate subject librarians, as needed.
- Collections transfer to SRLF:
- Brian was successful in lobbying the UL’s Group to allow UCSD to deposit 40,000 volumes to the SRLF.
- There are various ways to move large numbers of volumes to meet the Cluster’s ongoing collections review: 1) Review inactive serials in the Tower (6831 titles); 2) Review active titles in the Tower with significant back runs both in the Stacks at the Annex. Sam will work with Ryan to generate these lists. We should complete review of our sections by January 31, 2006 to allow time for more general review before Ryan begins to process the sets at the end of February.
- Sam reminded everyone to continue with the review of the monographic collections and transfer very low-use items to the SRLF. This is our last opportunity before SRLF is filled.
