SSHL Cluster Bibliographers Meeting
Price Center Berkeley Room
13 February 2002

Present: Leslie Abrams, Ken Calkins, Harold Colson, Elizabeth Cowell, Larry Cruse, Sam Dunlap (convener), Laura Galván-Estrada, Jackie Hanson, Sanae Isozumi, Elliot Kanter (recorder), Karen Lindvall-Larson, Rob Melton, Alice Perez, Karrie Peterson, Amy Wallace, Victoria Williamson, Lynda Claassen

I. Announcements

Leslie reported that Cabinet had approved "Arts Libraries" as a collective name for AAL, FVL and Music.  A new masthead logo on the webpages for the three libraries will include that name.

Leslie also reported that the Southern California chapter of ARLIS will meet at UCSD, June 7-8. There will be a session on collection management.

Rob has responded to a call by the Library of Congress for projects that will make the American Memories digital collections more accessible to academic libraries.  He has met with the head of the San Diego Supercomputer Center for initial discussion on various ways that metadata might be used to build American Memories materials into the Theatre curriculum.

Elliot reported that CDL is negotiating for a license to Reader's Guide Retrospective.

II. Update on Sixth College

Hillel Schwartz, Sixth College Coordinator, met with library-wide representatives about the core curriculum, which focuses on how art and technology shape the world. Interviews are underway for a Chief Technology Officer.  Linda Strauss is the Thematic Coordinator for core sequence classes.  There will be a writing program that emphasizes fluency in English, digital literacy, and learning how to make arguments in media or materials other than words. Bibliographers are reminded to forward form selection slips for interdisciplinary titles (especially in the areas mentioned above) to Sam Dunlap or Susan Jurist.

Jackie pointed out that, although bibliographers will have the usual liaison role with faculty in their departments who teach Sixth College courses, CLICS will be the primary connection for library instruction and Kari Lucas is the contact.

III. Special Purchase Proposals

Most proposals were funded. The next call for proposals will be in Spring.

Sam requested that future proposals be sent to him (for SSH), Leslie (for the Arts Libraries), or Harold (at IR/PS) so they may be coordinated and prioritized.  He reminded the group that "out of cycle" requests may be made for special needs, if there are vendor sale deadlines, etc.

IV. Annex "A" lists

The "Z" weeding project was finished, with 7,000 volumes of monograph titles and 4,000 volumes of serials reviewed for relocation to SRLF. A Boolean search is being run for the "A's", which represent four full ranges in the Annex, most of which are serial runs.

V. Xipolis

Use of the Xipolis database is one of the benefits of belonging to the German Resources Project, part of the AAU/ARL Global Resources Program.  UCSD recently joined the Project and will start a basic subscription to Xipolis, an online collection of core German-language reference titles in all subject areas.  Browsing is unlimited, but retrieved articles cost approximately $0.36.  We have started with a $500 subscription level to gauge use and need.  If usage exceeds $500, it will be six months before the account can be replenished. Unused monies will be rolled over to the next pay period.

VI. Yankee Slips -- problems

Rob has been comparing slips received with results of searching Yankee's GOBI database. He found a number of records for books in his subject areas for which we should have been getting either books or slips, but for which GOBI indicated we were to get neither. There was discussion of whether the profile is excluding certain publishers, call number ranges, series, or reprints.Preference for U.S. over British editions may also be a factor in getting neither. Bibliographers should e-mail Jeanette, our Yankee representative, with any concerns about their profiles. Sam will send out information on how to contact Jeanette and how to access GOBI. We should look at our profiles in documentation found in the Approval Room.
