Featured lists in Roger - next steps

Sam and Alice led this discussion. Peter Mueller is preparing a new titles list in music that will be updated once a month. Sam met with Stella Sanchez-Wade to discuss bibliographer input. Questions include: who should coordinate bibliographers' efforts, how to determine list parameters, how many lists we can have, and how they should be set up. Alice described the history of the featured lists process, which grows out of the lists previously prepared by the acquisitions department for bibliographer distribution. She shared Bruce's caution to make sure there is a need before you develop a list, as you will be the one maintaining it. Elliot asked about the possibility of having a new acquisitions list for SSHL by call number. Sam will meet with Karen Peters to determine how to proceed in identifying a liaison for bibliographer coordination of lists.

Index to Current Urban Documents

Jim mentioned the bound set in Reference, which indexes full-text microfiche at UCB. It includes 500 cities in the United States and Canada. For 2000-2001 it is going to be full-text on the Web. The microfiche will not be reproduced in any other format (Web version will not have retrospective holdings) and the microfiche edition will cease with the start of the Web product. There will be a paper index and a one-year cd index. CDL has discussed purchase of the Web-product, and there will be a Tier 2 agreement to be negotiated by UCB. It is hoped it will run between $2000-$3000 for each campus involved. The URL is http://www.urbdocs.com/.

Culinary works and cookbooks

Lynda gave us the history of the AIWF culinary arts collection in Special Collections. New additions are funded by the Institute and Lynda has focused on areas of UCSD's collection interest, including Latin America and Melanesia. Lynda receives substantial gifts of cookbooks for the collection and asked if bibliographers would be interested in reviewing materials she doesn't select in their subject areas for integration in the general collection. There was an enthusiastic positive response to her query.

Update on DARP, Slide Collection cataloging, etc.

Leslie described DARP, the music library's mechanism for delivering music sound reserves over the Web. It has been very successful, thanks to the collaboration of music staff, music department faculty, and Academic Computing. It is restricted now to music reserves, but Leslie expects the technology to be used in the future for other types of sound reserves. There were 200,000 slide records loaded into Roger in January. They have seen an increase in the use of slides, and anticipate in ten years slides will be available digitally.
