Announcements
Elliot asked bibliographers to review the "International Index to Black Periodicals" (on SAGE or the SSHL home page) which we have on trial to the end of the month. It is not the same as "Index to Black Periodicals" which we have in print format, and it includes people of African descent in Africa, Latin America, and other world regions in addition to the United States. Elliot asks that bibliographers advise him of whether or not they support the Libraries' purchase by November 16th.
Featured lists in Roger
Sam asked for a volunteer to serve as the liaison with Karen Peters for the bibliographers. There were no volunteers, and Sam said that the process of creating the lists will be easier once Millenium 2000 is installed. Elliot is setting up a list for communications, see his email message to this group dated 11/9 and titled "New Book Lists in Roger."
Student assistance
The "Featured lists in Roger" agenda item triggered a discussion of the Research Service's support of bibliographic checking. The department receives specific funds to support this activity but there was concern that searching seems to get low priority. Kathy offered to supervise a student doing searching. Sam suggested we need a student with foreign language skills, particularly German. Laura also mentioned that she and Alice are exploring the possibility of hiring a student assistant to help with web-related activities which could include Sage-related assistance for bibliographers.
Periodicals room proposal
Alice presented the proposal in Jackie's absence. It proposes that the CPNM department be moved in its entirety to the sixth floor and that bound volumes from throughout the tower be moved there also to create a periodicals room. Concerns expressed by bibliographers in the ensuing discussion included the fact that this is a very heavily used service and that the elevators are not capable of accommodating the traffic it would generate to the sixth floor; proximity of CPNM to the Reference Desk is very important; the need to increase reader stations in the tower because of Tidal Wave II is already projected to severely reduce stack space; and moving this department in its entirety to the sixth floor would displace a disproportionate number of books. The consensus of the group was that the CPNM as constituted on the first floor without an attached periodicals room is preferable to the configuration on the sixth floor proposed here.
Annex weeding project
Sam discussed a handout on the Annex weeding project and his proposed next steps for fall and intersession 2000/2001. Please contact Sam if you didn't get a handout. Bibliographers should be prepared to give a brief update on their progress at the January 10 SSH Bibliographers meeting.
Non English-language approval slips
Sam reviewed the European slips programs and subject areas and found them generally in order. Some subject areas from Casalini should be stopped and Sam will talk with Laura Archer about this. He asks that you forward any slips that might be of interest to European history to him rather than discarding them.
