Announcements:

1. Databases needing Cluster-wide endorsement

Elliot is going to request the purchase of Comm Abstracts, which starts in the early 80s to replace Communication Abstracts, which goes back to the late 90s. The difference in cost is $500/year.
There is a suite of Gale titles available through Net Library. Amy recommended getting some on trial and monitoring usage before we purchase more of the titles.

2. Liaison with the Human Development Program

Alice Perez has agreed to serve as the library-wide liaison and will coordinate outreach and instruction with other bibliographers and subject specialists, especially at the Biomedical Library. Sam will inform the Bibs Council.

3. Bibliographer responsibility discussion meeting in January

With the arrival of new librarians later this quarter, there will be an SSHL meeting in January to discuss bibliographers' subject assignments and responsibilities.

4. Gift to the Music Library

Vivendi Corp. donated 34,000 CDs to the Music Library. This gift will compliment the current collection of 17,000. It includes pop, jazz, country, classical and other genres.

5. Ampersand in Innopac

Innopac automatically inserts "and" which has become a problem with the non-English languages. We may want to suggest correcting this when it is time to submit Innopac enhancement requests.

Discussion with Phyllis:

1. Space - The Final Frontier

The University uses 5 year increments in their Capital Planning. The only library addition planned in the next 5 years is the Biomedical Library addition, which does not include more space for collections. The Administration is not optimistic about gaining any more collections space in the future. In planning for this, we will be using the Annex and SRLF for more and more of our collections. The West Wing Remodel will be done incrementally. With the remodel, Maps will be weeded and moved to another area within SSHL in order to shrink the overall footprint.

2. Budget

The book budget took a $400,000 cut in the Governor's budget this year. We are covered this year by temporary monies set aside last year in anticipation of such a cut. If the budget cut is ongoing, or become permanent, we will have to develop other strategies to deal with the shortfall.

3. Journal Cancellation Project

The Journal Cancellation Project will work to accomplish three goals - 1) good collection management (i.e. normal housekeeping); 2) decisions about print now that we have digital; and 3) free up some money to support other programs. The project is managed by a team made up of Phyllis, Sam Dunlap, Leslie Abrams, Harold Colson, Deborah Kegel, Anne Prussing, Peter Brueggeman and Stacy Nelson. There will be a database to provide the bibliographers with cancellation possibilities. The team will also determine how to credit departments who are canceling many titles, but not involving a large monetary amount.

4. Collection endowments

As part of the UCSD Capital Campaign, the Libraries will work to develop collection endowments to support our strengths and to develop weaker or emerging areas that will grow in the future.

Also:
Lisa Clark and Marlayna Christensen conducted a stacks survey to identify areas of the Tower that are extremely crowded. These subject areas will need to be reviewed by the bibliographers and weeded. Bibliographers may begin their review now. We discussed other types of materials that could be sent to the Annex or SRLF. These include back runs of titles included in JSTOR and additional backfiles of other journals overall. SRLF will accept 54,000 volumes from UCSD during the 2002-2003. This breaks down to 8000 volumes per month. In order to reduce our footprint in CPNM, and with the advent of digital scanners and enhanced document delivery, we may consider sending large sets of microforms to SRLF. Bibliographers were asked to identify potential candidates.
