Update on the management school proposal
Jackie and Harold gave a history of and progress report on the Libraries' interaction with Peter Cowhey, an IRPS faculty member and member of the planning committee on a proposed school of management at UCSD. Please see Jackie's email memo of October 20th for the Libraries' response to the committee's concerns. The bibliographers' were cautioned not to discuss this outside of this group, as the planning is in the preliminary stages and other campuses have not been advised. The proposal has been fast-tracked largely because of the current availability of private funds, and it will be presented to the Faculty Senate in November. If approved, the school would open in the fall of 2003 and would have 200 students in the two-year MBA program the first year, with the eventual number 600 students, with 300 in each class. It would be sited near RIMAC and the Institute of the Americas on the north end of campus. The plan is for the school to be a premier nationally-recognized school, with most students not coming from this region. The goal of the library will be to provide "digital resources anytime, anywhere."
Discussion of allocating the large extra one-time funds
CMG has an unusually large pot of temporary one-time money this year. One idea is to fund retrospective purchases for new programs as appropriate. Funds could possibly be used to provide access to collections. Jackie asks that we submit all "potentially compelling" proposals.
Personal memberships in societies
Please submit to Sam any proposals for personal memberships in societies to be paid by the Libraries should a personal membership provide additional benefits to the Libraries over institutional memberships. Please indicate how much the membership would be and the added benefits for the Libraries. Sam will then forward the requests on to CMG.
Strategies for "easy" Annex weeding
Sam discussed the availability of serial and monograph lists of materials at the Annex. Karen Peters has downloaded all the information and run specialized lists by call number as requested by bibliographers. The UGL reference collection is being pulled back from the Annex and is available for review (in portions) in the Catalog Department next to Karen Peter's office.
There is also a project in the works involving superseded reference books. Please see Sam or Alice if you would like to be involved in this project.
Foreign-language approval slips
Sam is interested in feed-back regarding approval slips from European vendors. He will investigate subject areas being covered by the European approval plans and suggest areas that could be omitted.
