SSH Cluster Bibliographers Group

9 February 2005
Price Center Gallery B
1-2:30 p.m.

Agenda

Present: Leslie Abrams, Ken Calkins, Kathy Creely, Jim Cheng, Harold Colson, Larry Cruse, Tammy Dearie, Sam Dunlap (convenor), Ryan Finnerty, Tony Harvell, Sanae Isozumi, James R Jacobs, Susan Jurist, Elliot Kanter, Rob Melton, Arvid Nelsen, Alice Perez, Vicki Williamson

Announcements:

Tony noted that "default" fund codes are now being printed on the YBP approval slips. We need only cross out the fund on the slip itself if a change is needed. Staff will track changes to see if there might be further refinement needed at the Yankee end. Books are staged for two weeks, at which time they will be charged to the default fund code, unless changes have been otherwise indicated.

Rob noted that an overview of the UC Post-Print repository is scheduled for February 16 from noon-1 p.m. in the Seuss Room. This is sponsored by our Scholarly Communications Task Force (Peter Brueggeman, Nancy Stimson, Rob Melton and Tony Harvell). Bring your brown bag in discreetly.

Sam noted that “on order” or “in process” titles in Roger are not requestable.

Updates:

Sam suggested that librarians weed their collections soon in order to take advantage of SRLF, which is anticipated to be full by the end of 2006. After that, if will be several years before Phase 3 is built and ready for use.

Discussion:

1. Handling of CD-ROMs and other accompanying materials.

Retrospective

Prospective

2. Highlights from the 1/31 Collection Coordinators Group meeting (Leslie, Harold, and Sam attended)

UCSD has finalized our print receipts for Blackwell titles. Sam distributed a list of Taylor & Francis new journals requests from the SSH Cluster. The list includes new titles over the last three or four years that we were not allowed to add, as well as older titles that we would ideally have added in order to meet UCSD’s evolving research and instruction needs.

3. Blackwell Table of Contents service

Sam distributed information on the service and how it would benefit our users. For a title such as The Globalization reader, a note reads “this new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated with thirty new essays and a new section on anti-globalization movement.” Amazon.com provides this content information on their website. We would send our records to Blackwell for them to add content information in the 970 field. A trend by LC is to provide contents for multi-authored works with links to tables of contents and this appears in the 505 field. In this case, we would not want to duplicate contents. Blackwell contents information is keyword searchable, but would appear in Roger only (not in Melvyl). Blackwell provides content retrospectively to 1991. There was general agreement that we should pursue this service, and Sam will work with Tony to craft a proposal.

4. New items lists in Roger

Susan announced that most bibliographers want to keep the Roger new items lists. With the move to the new Millennium client, it will be easier to update the lists. If librarians want to have new lists added, they should let Susan know by March 1. Old lists will be removed. Non-Roman scripts are not be a problem. Susan will provide training and DSSL will install the client. Susan will send more information to the group.
